What was the Lome Convention ?
1975 trade agreement between 71 ACP countries and the EU which allowed these countries to have special and differential treatment with tarriff-free imports to supply EU markets.
Aim for Lome Convention ?
Enable these former European colonies to develop independently without having to use overseas aid and protect mainly smaller, family-run farms in the Caribbean and Africa from competition with large Latin American producers.
Why did the US get upset with this agreement ?
At the time US TNCs were providing 75% of the EU market while only 7% were Caribbean. Despite this in 1992 the US filed a complaint to the WTO against unfair trade to which the WTO sided with the US ad rule had to cease.
