Causes of behaviour can be established using methods that are empirical and reliable. Scientific knowledge is self - corrective meaning it can be refined or abandoned scientific psychologists create contrived situations that create artificial behaviour. Introspection is idiographic in nature. This was heavily criticised by behaviourists as universal principles that could be applied to human behaviour can’t be generated from introspection. Behaviourists suggest a nomothetic approach to investigations is more advantageous. Over time psychology has become more scientific due to modern methods to study the brain.

Little Hans 5 y/o who had a phobia of horses after seeing one collapse on the street. Freud suggested that his phobia was form of displacement in which his fear of his father was transferred onto horses. Therefore, horses were just symbolic of his unconscious fear : fear of castration due to the opedipus complex.

Psychanalysis - value of the taking cure. Encourages client to talk about their dreams and childhood experiences to bring the content of the unconscious mind into the conscious to achieve catharsis. Aims to settle the conflicts between the conscious and unconscious mind.

unrepresentative sample: derived from the study of adults with emotion disorders. Based on case studies - although Freuds observations were detailed and carefully recorded, it is not possible to make such universal claims about human nature based on studies of a small number, they are also highly subjective and open to bias, for example it is unlikely that other researchers would have come to the same conclusion in the case of little Hans.
What was the debates for the psychodynamic approach - spiaced ?
Human behaviour us governed by unconscious drives and early traumatic childhood experiences that are repressed in the unconscious mind so the individual doesn’t have free will over their behaviour and is under the influence of psychic determinism. It is not falsifiable - it is not open to empirical testing as they occur at an unconscious level so is therefore not scientific in its approach to explaining behaviour.
