What is the main power of the executive branch?
To enforce the laws
Chief of party?
The president is the head of his political party
Chief executive?
The president enforces the laws of the U.S he oversees the executive branch.
Chief foreign policy maker?
The president creates foreign policy and decides how the U.S will interact with other countries.
Head of state?
The president is the living symbol of the U.S he must set a strong example for the people of the United States.
Commander in chief?
The president oversees the U.S armed forces
Chief legislator?
The president approves or vetoes congressional bills
Watcher of the economy?
The president creates the nation’s budget and works to create a strong economy.
What is the cabinet? How are those individuals selected?
Group of people that advise the president, and the president appoints them with senate approval.
What does the state department do and who’s the head of this department?
- in charge of foreign relations and world wide issues
- Secretary of State- John Kerry
What does the treasury department do and who’s the head of this department?
- manages government money and makes currency
- secretary of treasury- Jacob Lew
What does the secretary of defense do and who’s the head of this department?
- manages all branches of the armed forces
- secretary of defense- Ashton carter
What does the department of justice do and who’s the head of this department?
- investigates and prosecutes violation of federal laws
- attorney general- Loretta lynch
What is the order of succession for president?
Vice President- Joseph Biden
Speaker of the house- John Boehner
President pro tempor- Orrin hatch
Cabinet- John Kerry, Jacob Lew, Loretta lynch.
How can the president check the legislative branch?
Veto power over congressional bills
* congress can override vetoes
How can the president check the judicial branch?
Appointment of judges in judicial branch
* must be approved by the senate
What is the electoral college and why was it created?
A body of people who represent our states and formally vote for the president. It was made based on our founding fathers, they wanted states to have a role in national elections so ill informed people couldn’t vote for the president directly, and insure part of the country would.
What are the qualifications for being the president?
Must be 35 years old, be a natural born citizen, have loved in the U.S for at least 14 years, each term is 4 years, cannot serve for more than 2 terms.
What determines how many electors each states get?
It’s the number of representative in the House of Representatives plus the number of senators you have. ( minimum 3 )

How does a candidate win the presidency under the electoral college system?
A candidate needs 270 votes minimum to win the presidency.
