General grant suffered heavy losses on the first day but soon turned the war around and forced the southerners to retreat on the second day

Where was Vicksburg located?
On the Mississippi, between Memphis and New Orleans
Why was Vicksburg important?
It was important because it was the only stronghold still in the confederate hands on the Mississippi.
What happened at Vicksburg?
Grant’s men surrounded Vicksburg and prevented supplies from reaching it. The city surrendered six weeks later on July 4th, 1863, one day after the crucial victory at Gettysburg. Now the Union controlled the entire Mississippi, and the confederacy is cut into two.

To capture Richmond, Virginia.

April 2nd
What happened to Richmond?
Richmond is attacked and finally captured by the Union army. When the Union army got there they found out that Jefferson Davis, the president of the confederacy, had abandoned Richmond. So the Union army destroys much of the city, claiming their victory over the confederacy.
