Q

What is the main difference between Respirometers and Barometer?

A

Respirometer measures VOLUME in Liters/mL, and the barometer measures PRESSURE in cmH2O

6
Q

Normal minute ventilation

A

5-10L/min

**Assesses ability to tolerate weaning from ventilator

8
Q

If minute vent is over 10L/min what does it mean?

A

Means the patient is working too hard to breathe.

9
Q

What measurement evaluates if the patient is breathing deep enough

A

Obtained using IBW x 5= Minimum spontaneous TV

Q

What are the two ways to measure VC?

A

Via Wrights respirometer doing a FVC or SVC.

SVC- have them inhale all the way in and then slowly exhales into device until fully empty.

Q

What does VC measure?

A

Measures the patient’s inspiratory reserve volume and expiratory reserve volume. **Allows us to know how they will be able to ventilate under stress/ADLs

16
Q

A pressure manometer measures what?

A

It helps you obtain someones NIF MIP or MIF in cmH20

17
Q

What does it mean if you have a higher negative reading on the pressure monometer?

A

The more negative, the stronger the inspiratory muscles.

-70cmH20 is stronger than a reading of -30cmH20

18
Q

If you want to determine an appropriate treatment, what value would you want to look at?

A

IC (volume of air that can be maximally inspired from resting expiration)

19
Q

Normal value and minimum value of NIF

A
  • 20 is minimum. >-80 is normal.

* *If they are at -20, the still might be weaned off vent but just much more comfortable.

20
Q

RSBI normal value

A

less than 105. If 106 or greater, they are not a good choice to start weaning
