Q

Why is NPPV a game changer for COPD patients?

A

Helps prevent intubation of COPD patients. Having to be intubated multiple times a year will increase chances of a lot of bad things like VAP, and other trauma.

Q

What is the overall goal when using BiPAP for a COPD patient?

A

Want to aim to correct the pH, NOT the CO2 levels because you can knock out the hypoxic drive

Q

Indications for BiPAP in acute care?

A
  • Hypercapnic- pH less than 7.35 (**Lower than 7.22 and you will need to probably intubate)
  • Asthma
  • Weaning COPD patients and hopefully prevent them to progress towards mechanical ventilation.
  • hypoxemic resp failure
  • Pulmonary edema
  • ARDS
  • Pneumonia
