Noninvasive Ventilation Flashcards
What are the three methods of ventilation without using an ET tube
negative pressure
abdominal-displacement
positive pressure
NPPV definition
Means to deliver noninvasive ventilation without having to use an ET tube.
Why is NPPV a game changer for COPD patients?
Helps prevent intubation of COPD patients. Having to be intubated multiple times a year will increase chances of a lot of bad things like VAP, and other trauma.
What is the overall goal when using BiPAP for a COPD patient?
Want to aim to correct the pH, NOT the CO2 levels because you can knock out the hypoxic drive
Indications for BiPAP in acute care?
- Hypercapnic- pH less than 7.35 (**Lower than 7.22 and you will need to probably intubate)
- Asthma
- Weaning COPD patients and hopefully prevent them to progress towards mechanical ventilation.
- hypoxemic resp failure
- Pulmonary edema
- ARDS
- Pneumonia
CPAP is used for what type of sleep apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea
*BiPAP used for Central sleep apnea (because pt can’t spontaneously breath
If someone vomits on BiPAP, what do you do?
Immediately take them off, suction them, have them cough, and put them on oxygen. NOT back on BiPAP
