Q

What are the issues surrounding same-sex marriage?

A

Christian views can vary from condemning same-sex relationships and it is stated in 1 Corinthians 6:9 that! “…the wicked will not pass God’s Kingdom…people who are immoral or who worship idols or are adulterers or homosexual…”. Other Christians believe this only applies to practising same-sex relationships and not those who abstain from sex altogether.

Many Christian’s believe that human sexuality, sexual orientation and gender identity are gifts of God gladly to be accepted, enjoyed and honoured as a way of both expressing and growing in love between two people, in accordance with the life and teaching of Jesus Christ.

Many countries still do not give any rights to same-sex couples as they are not seen as legal marriages and so are denied their civil rights, e.g. making medical decisions for partner, due to not being seen the same as a heterosexual married couple.

May suffer from loneliness as have no they trust and love completely to turn to who can help them in their struggles and constantly be their for them.
26
What is abortion?
Deliberate ending of a pregnancy, with intentional destruction of foetus from womb to cause its death.
27
Why do some people support abortion?
1. Woman should have right to choose what’s happens to her own body. Right to decide to carry foetus or not. 2. Embryo is cluster of cells and not actual human being. Life does not really start until foetus is viable. Foetus cannot survive outside womb. 3. Woman is a human not a container for foetus. If risk to woman’s health she should have right to abortion. 4. Aborting damaged foetus better than bringing severely damaged child with poor quality of life into the world. 5. Banning abortions puts women at risk by forcing them to use illegal and back-street abortionists. 6. Woman may not be able to cope if she has been raped, is too young or mentally incapable of continuing pregnancy. 7. People should take responsibility for consequences of their actions. Abortion is a responsible way of dealing with unwanted child.
28
What are the Christian teachings on abortion?
Catholic - Gravely immoral. From moment of conception life must be guarded with greatest care while abortion is an unspeakable crime. Abortion is grave sin but there is no sin that God ‘s mercy cannot reach when it finds a repentant heart. Presbyterian - Scriptures state that from earliest days in womb, unborn child is fully human, a person made in image of God. Human life begins at conception but abortion is justified when pregnancy endangers life of mother or unborn child has life-limiting condition. Methodist - Abortion on demand is wrong. Foetus is not regarded appendage of mother’s body. Abortion is allowed if mother’s life is at risk, risk of grave injury to physical or mental health of mother, in cases of rape or incest or gross abnormality of foetus where is incapable of survival. Anglican - Reject practice of induced abortion. Abortion ought to be option in exceptional cases.
29
Is it one’s right to have an abortion?
Woman should have right to choose what happens to her body.
30
Do we have the right to end life?
No as we are each made in the image and likeness of God so to take another’s life would be to disobey God. Sanctity of life means only God has the right to take life. Exodus’s 21:22 states that if a person causes the death of a women and her unborn child “then they should be killed”. Commandment: “thou shall not kill” suggests that God does not want us to kill each other.
31

What are the different types of euthanasia?
Active euthanasia Passive euthanasia Voluntary euthanasia Non-voluntary euthanasia Involuntary euthanasia
33

37
What is involuntary euthanasia?
Person who dies wants to live but killed anyway. Usually same as murder but not always.
38
What are the RC teachings on the sanctity of life?
Most Christians disapprove of euthanasia as vulnerable people deserve care and protection, and proper care at end of life much better option than euthanasia. Heart of opposition to euthanasia is belief that human life is sacred as God created it. Human life should be protected and preserved, euthanasia regarded as murder.
39
What are the Catholic Church teachings on the sanctity of life?
No one in any way can permit killing of innocent human being, whether foetus for embryo, infant or adult, old person or one suffering from incurable disease, or person who is dying. No one is permitted to ask for this act of killing, either for himself or herself or for another person entrusted to his or her care. Violation of divine law, offence against dignity of human person, crime against life, attack on humanity. Pleas for death are not for euthanasia, it is anguished plea for help and love. A sick person needs beside medical care is love, human and supernatural warmth with which sick person can and ought to be surrounded by all those close to the.
40
What are the Presbyterian Church teachings on the sanctity of life?
Compassion for fellow human beings means we have duty to help them die in as comfortable and peaceful ways as we can. Dying in faith means going to be with Christ and it is right that we should welcome release of death for those whose quality of life has been reduced to daily grind of suffering or infirmity. Christian’s should urge government and society to adopt other choices available for alleviation of pain and suffering. Facilities like hospice movement should be encouraged.
