8-10 male college students with only 1 actual participant- all others were confederates
Procedure
Participants shown a standard line and 3 comparsion lines
They were asked to publicly identify which of the lines matched the standard length
The real participant was seated near the end after most confedurates had given answers
How many control trials?
Initial 6 control trails where the confederates gave the correct answers
12 critical trials conferderates gave the same incorrect answer unanimously
What did the participants think the study was about?
Visual perception
Findings
75% of participants conformed at least once
5% of participants conformed every time
Overall conformity rate of 32%
What does Aschs findings suggest?
People conform due to normative social influence
They conform for social approval, avoiding rejection or being seen as an outcast
