1
Q

what is muscle strength

A

the ability to produce tension for maintaining postural control and for moving body parts. Eg postural control
demonstrates a degree of power of a muscle when movement is resisted as with objects or gravity

Q

procedure

A
  • do introducing setps
  • osition the client so that direction of movement will be again gravity. (gravity is coming down) - Stabilise proximal to the joint that will move, Prevent other substitution movements e.g. shoulder hitching or lower back extension
  • Apply resistance
  • Apply resistance to distal end of the segment into which the muscle inserts, start with light resistance, increasing to moderate and lastly maximum resistance over 2-3 seconds. Resistance applied in mid-range of the joint motion. *say out loud light, moderate, maximum

Record muscle grade
- ifhe client cannot move through the range against gravity then move the client into the “gravity eliminated” position. Gravity eliminated position – moving horizontal to the floor and NO RESISTANCE will be applied. *gravity is a type of resistance, fairly weak with good muscoskeletal health but difficult for people with poor musculoskeletal health. If they cant move against gravity no resistance will be applied
Palpate muscle belly / tendon to determine that the muscle is contracting
Record muscle grade
