assessment 3 Flashcards
(2 cards)
power grip strength assessment procedure
Seat client in chair
Check for comfort/pain in wrist, fingers etc
Explain what you are going to do
Elbow at 90 degrees flexion and parallel to trunk (upper arm close to body) *may have to apply force
Stabilise proximal to elbow (tester holds elbow by the clients side)
Set position of dynamometer – usually 2nd position (record this position)
“Squeeze as hard as you can”
Repeat for three trials with 2-3 minute rest between trials (exam condition do not reflect this)
Record 3 like measures (kgs) and then take average of the 3 trials (sometimes a result does not make sense, consider striking out that measure and completing another one) *in exam take three similar measurements do not need average, must take out source the doesn’t make sense and then do another one. *passive should always be greater than active
pinch grip strength assessment procedure
Three commonly used pinches are 2 point tip (picking up an M&M), lateral pinch (putting a key in a door) & three jaw chuck or Called three point pinch (palmar pinch – picking up a pen, two fingers and a thumb)
