Atomic Structture Flashcards
(6 cards)
Similarities and differences between isotopes of the same atom
•Same number of protons
• Same number of electrons: therefore have similar chemical reactions
• Different number of neutrons: therefore have different masses
What’s an isotope?
Atoms of the same element which have the same number of protons (atomic number) but a different number of neutrons (mass number)
Why are atoms neutral?
The contain the same amount of positive protons and negative electrons
How do u find out the number of protons, neutrons and electrons with atomic and mass number?
Number of protons = atomic number
Number of neutrons = mass number - atomic number
Number of electrons = number of protons
Define the term mass number
The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an Atom
Define the term atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
