Coordination and control Flashcards
(19 cards)
Hormonal systems speed and response
• Slow
• Hormones (chemicals) that travel in the blood
Nervous systems speed and response
• Fast
• Electrical impulses along neurons
What does effector mean?
Parts of the body, muscles and glands, that produce a response
What does receptor mean?
Group of specialised cells which detect stimulus and produce electrical impulses in response. Different receptors are sensitive to different stimuli.
Long term effects of diabetes
- Stroke
- Kidney failure
- Eye damage
- Heart disease
Synptoms of diabetes
• High blood glucose levels
• Presence of glucose in the urine
• Being thirsty often
• Lethargic
How does insulin work?
Insulin lowers the blood glucose level back to normal by:
• Converting glucose into glycogen in the liver
• Increasing respiration
Whats insulin and what produces it?
• The pancreas produces the hormone called insulin.
• Insulin is produced by the pancreas when the blood glucose levels rise above the normal (after eating) and it acts in the liver
What are hormones?
• Chemical messengers
• Produced by gland
• That travel in the blood
• To target an organ
How does phototropism advantage the plant?
- Get more growth
- More light
- Maximises photosynthesis
Where does the shoot tip move to?
Shaded side which causes them to elongate (get longer)
Whats phototropism?
A plant growth response which results plant stems growing in the direction of a light source
Whats a reflex action?
• Unconscious responses without thinking (brain not involved)
• automatic
• Fast
• Coordinated by spinal cord
(Blinking)
Whats a voluntary action?
• Brain is involved in thinking about an action
• Controlled
• Conscious
(Picking up a drink)
What is the pathways of neurones in a reflex action?
Reflex arc
What are the 3 types of neurones?
- Sensory neurones
- Association/ Relay neurones
- Motor neurones
Response to the nervous system
- Stimulus
- Receptor
- Coordinator
- Effector
- Response
Whats a stimulus?
Anything that we respond to (loud noise, hot plate)
What does the nervous system consist in?
Brain and spinal cord which make up the central nervous system (CNS)
