Atomic Structure Notes Flashcards
(27 cards)
What does the structure of atoms dictate?
The periodic properties of elements
What was the issue with Rutherfords model of the atom?
It did not show properties and its stable
What is matter?
A particulate that has mass and a well defined position
What does energy have?
Wave like properties with out mass or a fixed position
What do Atoms and molecules do?
Emit and absorb energy
What do subatomic particle have properties of?
Properties of both particles and waves
What does electromagnetic radiation consist of?
Waves
What is a Wave?
A vibration by which energy is transmitted
What 3 parameters characterize waves?
Wavelength (λ)
Frequency (v)
Speed (s)
What is the speed of all electromagnetic raditation?
The speed of light c = 3x10^8
What is the formula that relates speed, wavelengths and frequency?
c = v λ
How can radiation be emitted or absorbed?
In small quantities
What is the energy of radiation proportional to?
Their frequency
What is a Quantum?
The smallest amount of energy that could be absorbed or emitted in the form of electromagnetic radiation
What is the formula for the energy of a Quantum?
E = hv
When does a change in an atoms energy occur?
When the atom absorbs or emits one or more packets of quanta E = nhv
What did Einstein say electromagnetic radiation was?
He said electromagnetic radiation was a flux of particles called photons
When is an electron able to break free?
When it absorbs a photon of enough energy to break its attraction to the atom
Which surface of the metal do electrons leave?
The metal above the threshold frequency
What affects the intensity of the current?
The intensity of the light shone
What increases the number of electrons ejected?
Increasing the intensity of the light with the frequency above the threshold frequency
What increases the kinetic energy of released electrons?
Increased frequency of light
What is n = 1?
The ground state
What is n = 2?
The first excited state
