Atoms Flashcards
(10 cards)
1
Q
What are atoms?
A
Atoms are the basic building block of all ordinary matter and are the basic unit of a chemical element.
2
Q
What are protons?
A
- Protons are positively charged
- Located inside the nucleus
- Are included in the mass of an atom
- Determines the atoms atomic number and elements identity
3
Q
What are neutrons?
A
- Neutrons have no charge
- Located inside the nucleus
- Included in the mass of an atom
4
Q
What are electrons
A
- Electrons are negatively charged subatomic particles
- Located outside of the nucleus
- Does not contribute to the mass of an atom
- Have the same quantity in an atom as a proton does.
- Protons count = electron count/Atomic number = electron count
- Are elementry particles, unlike protons and neutrons
5
Q
What is the periodic table
A
- A table that shows all the different elements discovered.
6
Q
What is an Atomic Number?
A
- Atomic number = quantity of protons
7
Q
What is the Atomic Mass?
A
- Atomic mass = Atomic number (Proton quantity) + nuetron quantity.
8
Q
What are quarks?
A
- Quarks are elementary particles (Can’t be split.)
- Six different types
• Up Quark
• Down Quark
• Strange Quark
• Charm Quark
• Top Quark
• Bottom Quark
9
Q
What elementary particles exist in a Proton?
A
- 2 Up Quarks, and one Down Quark
10
Q
What elementary particles exist in a Neutron?
A
- 2 Down Quarks, and one Up Quark
