Microscope Flashcards
(18 cards)
How do you carry a microscope?
- With two hands one hand holding the arm the other supporting the base.
You should you clean the lenses of a microscope?
- using lens paper
How do you prepare a wet mount?
- Place the specimen on a glass slide, put a drop of water on the specimen. At a 45 degree angle, place the coverslip over the specimen
What is the first step when focusing the microscope?
- Start with low power, using coarse adjustment knob, focus the object.
- Switch to the medium power objective lens. Use the coarse adjustment knob for sharper focusing.
- Switch to the high power objective lens and use the fine adjustment knob for further focusing
Why should the fine adjustment knob only be used under medium and high power objective lens?
- It may break the slide
How should you store the microscope?
- ) Store under low power
- ) Wrap the wire over the base of the microscope
- ) Cover the microscope with its bag
- ) Store the microscope by its numbered order
How do you calculate the total magnification of the microscope?
- Objective lens x eyepiece
What is the body tubes function?
- The part through which light passes from one set of lenses to the next
What is the nosepiece’s function
- The parts that contain lenses that support 2 or three lenses with different magnifications.
What is the objective lens function
- The parts closes to the specimen that magnifies the image based on it’s power. 4x low, 10x medium, 40x high
What is the stages function
- The flat platform which holds the specimen
- Mechanical system
What is the iris diaphragms function?
Controls the amount of light passing through the specimen
- Light system
What is the lamps function
- Light source
- light system
What is the eyepeices function?
- Contains lenses that magnify the image already magnified by the objective lens
What is the arms function?
- Vertical support for the focusing gear
- Mechanical system
What is the coarse adjustments function?
Used to bring the specimen into focus, by increasing the distance between the specimen and objective lens
- Part of the mechanical system
What is the fine adjustment function?
Used to sharpen the image of the specimen
- part of the mechanical system
What is the bases function
Support structure of the microscope
- part of the mechanical system
