ATP Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are the three components that make up ATP?
Adenine, ribose (pentose), and three phosphates.
What reaction forms ATP from its components?
Condensation reaction.
What enzyme forms ATP in condensation reactions?
ATP synthase.
What enzyme breaks ATP into ADP and Pi?
ATP hydrolase.
How much energy does ATP release?
Relatively small amount.
Why is releasing a small amount of energy beneficial?
Little energy is lost as heat.
How quickly is energy released from ATP?
Instantaneously.
What can ATP do to other compounds?
Phosphorylates them.
What is the effect of phosphorylation by ATP?
Makes compounds more reactive.
How quickly can ATP be re-synthesised?
Rapidly.
Does ATP leave cells?
No, it is not lost from cells.
How can an enzyme be phosphorylated?
By attachment/association of inorganic phosphate.
Where does the phosphate come from to phosphorylate enzymes?
From hydrolysis of ATP.
What is released when ATP is hydrolysed?
ADP + Pi.
