ATP Breakdown Flashcards

1
Q

Energy currency of the body

A
  • Energy is stored in Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)= exists in all cells + is the energy currency of the body.
  • ATP is made up of atoms held together by high energy bonds:
    • 1 Adenosine
    • 3 Phosphates
  • Separating these atoms releases energy= exothermic reaction.

Q

Energy production: process

A
  1. Body needs energy.
  2. Enzyme called ATPase is released.
  3. ATPase breaks down ATP into Adenosine di-phosphate (ADP) and inorganic phosphate (Pi).
  4. Energy is released through an exothermic reaction.
  5. Energy is used for muscular contractions.

Additional info

A
  • Limited supply of ATP.
  • Lasts for 2 seconds.
  • Once it runs out ADP and Pi must be put back together (resynthesized).
