Conscientious objectors
COS
Many civilians objected conscription due to ethical or religious reasons. Many COS were imprisoned and many forced to serve .
In WW1 COS would be shunned even by their own family. Many were victims of hate crimes due to being seen as cowards
In WW2 COS did receive much better treatment and were given alternate jobs sometimes not even related to the war however they were still treated with hostility.
Changes in reporting.
1914 one journalist reports from the battle field
1916 five journalists are allowed on the front line
2003 700 reporters part of coalition forces . Due to the advancements in technology reporting on the front lines have become much easier. Due to the increased exposure of military activities resistance to the war effort has increased .
Media impacting Societal attitudes
WW1- volunteers fell as the number of casualties deterred many from signing up
Since WW2 public support for war has rapidly declined . A million protesters marched against the IRAQ war.
Censorship and propaganda
WW1 the government had lots of influence in relation to the information released to the public . Many soldiers letters were intercepted and censored before being sent to their families
Propaganda was used heavily to increase support for the war. In WW1 they focused on bashing Germany labeling them as the bad guys however in WW2 instead of exaggerating victories they instead focused on the horrors of war showing them that they needed to win or the situation would worsen. Governments made it very clear that they would shut down any newspapers that released information that they deemed to inappropriate for the public.
