Changes of recruiting in this period
First world war-Thousands required to replace casualties. By 1916 the military service act introduces conscription for unmarried men between 18-41. By the end of the war conscription is ended .
Second world war-Conscription is reintroduced . By 1941 conscription applied to men 18-51 and women aged 20-30 and by 1943 the maximum age for women was increased to 51 as well.
By 1960s a permanent voluntary army is reintroduced .
Professional army
Britain has developed a professional army which has around 85,000 combatants . Full time force is 150,000.

- recruits sign up for a minimum of 14 week basic training
Total war
Due to wealth and resources of a country providing more for the military limited warfare is no longer used . Now the enemy is worn down until it runs out of man power. This can take years to do so
