What is autism?
Lifelong neuro developmental condition that is characterised by differences in behaviour, social interaction, communication, special interests and sensory processing
How is autism diagnosed?
Symptoms need to be present since childhood and the extent to which they impair the person’s daily functioning needs to be determined
What are some common features among autistic people?
Unusually intense or focussed interests
Excellent memory
High level of attention to details, plans and codes
Either difficulties or exceptional skills in planning and self-organisation
Strict adherence to rules and routines
Repetitive body movements
Repetitive use of objects
What factors can cause autism?
There is no single causes but there are strong genetic links. Exposure to viral infection during pregnancy can also affect child development
What strategies can a nurse employ to form a therapeutic relationship with an autistic patient?
Connect with family before working with patient
Use clear and concise words in short sentences
Always explain what you want to do with your patient
Make compromises with the patient
Never make a promise you can’t keep
What are the three main types of therapy for autistic patients?
ABA therapy
Floor time
Occupational therapy
What are some common goals for paediatric autistic patients?
Independent dressing
Eating
Grooming
Using the bathroom
Fine motor skills like writing, colouring, cutting with scissors
