AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM Flashcards
(26 cards)
➢ Motor in nature
➢ They make smooth muscles and glands contract
AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
2 divisions of ANS
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic
It is made up of upper motor neurons and lower motor neurons.
Somatic Motor System
Located inside the CNS
Upper motor neuron
located inside the ventral horn (PNS)
Lower motor neuron
What do you call to cell bodies located outside the CNS?
Ganglion
What do you do to the cell body that is inside the CNS where the lateral horn of thoracic and lumbar spinal segments are found?
Preganglionic Neuron
The cell body is outside the CNS - spinal roots, and prevertebral/postvertebral ganglions.
Postganglionic Neuron
It has a cranium/brainstem and sacral outflow.
(craniosacral outflow). Preganglionic neuron cell bodies are located close to the target organs
Parasympathetic
It supplies the thoracoabdominal area
Vagus Nerve
Supply areas in the head
Area 3, 7, 9
Descending column ladders is supplied by?
Sacral Segments (Splanchnic nerve-S2)
Descending column ladders is supplied by?
Sacral Segments (Splanchnic nerve-S2)
Preganglionic cell bodies are located at the
thoracolumbar (T1-L3) lateral horn and it has a short
preganglionic fiber
➢ If your SNS is going to your extremities, you use
paravertebral ganglion
➢ If it goes to the organs, you use prevertebral which
have specific names
Sympathetic
Organs of the ANS in Parasympathetic is supplied by:
Nuclei of 3, 7, 9, 10 and sacral ventral horn
Organs of the ANS in Sympathetic is supplied by:
Lateral horn of thoracic 1 to lumbar 3
➢ Constricts the pupillary muscles
➢ Ciliary ganglion is very close to the eyeball (post
ganglionic)
➢ Nuclei used: Edinger Westhphal
CN 3
➢ Axons start via intermediate nerve of Wisberg that
divides into greater petrosal nerve and Chorda
tympani
➢ Superior salivatory nucleus is the preganglionic
nuclei of the 7th cranial nerve
➢ Preganglionic fiber will divide into two because one function is for lacrimation and lacrimation for post ganglionc fiber using pterygopalatine ganglion
which is located in the orbit of your eyeball for your
lacrimal glands
➢ The second goes to your salivary glands which is the submandibular ganglion which is located at the
submandibular and sublingual glands and mucous
glands of oral cavity
CN 7 (pons)- Facial Nerve
➢ Preganglionic nuclei is the inferior salivary nuclei to reach the otic ganglion
➢ Supplies the parotid glands and mucous glands of the oral cavity for salivary production
Cranial 9 (Medulla)- Glossopharyngeal Nerve
➢ Supplies the rest of the thoracoabdominal area
➢ Nuclei – Dorsal Vagal Efferent
CN 10 (Medulla)- Vagus Nerve
➢ Preganglionic fibers goes to ganglion via whiterami
➢ From the white rami, it will synapse at the para
vertebral ganglion or at the prevertebral ganglion
➢ if it enters the paravertebral ganglion hat is the end of the preganglionic neuron, the postganglionic
neuron goes back to the spinal roots via the gray
rami
➢ Post ganglionic fiber uses gray rami
Sympathetic System Rami
Ganglion that supplies the Head
Superior Cervical Ganglion
Ganglion that supplies the Heart
Middle and inferior cervical ganglion and Stellate Ganglion
Post ganglionic fibers for the stomach and small
intestine
Celiac Ganglion
