Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
(30 cards)
➢ Connects the CNS to the body (trunks and limbs)
➢ Motor and sensory in nature
➢ Made up of neurons
Peripheral Nervous System
The head of the neuron
Cell body
➢ Motor cell body at anterior horn cell
➢ Sensory cell body at dorsal root ganglion
➢ Axons are wrapped in myelin (produced by
oligodendroglia)
Peripheral Nerve Neuron
Each neuron wrapped by an _____.
Endoneurium
Each spinal root wrapped by a _____.
Perineurium
Each peripheral nerve is wrapped by _____.
Epineurium.
Blood supply of the PNS.
Vasa Nervorum
Compression of the whole nerve
Neuropraxia
➢ Axon cut but nerve sheath intact
➢ Occurs when there is starvation issues, poisoning,
diabetes, or cancer
Axonotmesis
➢ Both axons and nerve sheath cut
➢ Seen in trauma
Neurotmesis
Muscle spindles are receptors for changes of length in muscles, and the muscle should be taut to keep the muscle spindle working. Buried in the muscle and they contain afferent receptors for stretch, but they also contain contractile elements (gamma motor neurons).
Intrafusal Nerve Fibers
➢ Comprise the bulk of muscle and form the major
force-generating structure (alpha motor neurons)
Extrafusal Nerve Fibers
Composed of acetylcholine and needs ACH receptors in the muscle.
Neurotransmitters
An enzyme in the synapse degrades ACH into Acetyl and COA
Acetylcholinesterase
➢ Made up of lower motor neurons, ventral root,
anterior horn cell
➢ Going through the ventral root and going through
you extrafusal skeletal muscle fibers
➢ Stretching muscle causes a reflex contraction
➢ Controlled/inhibited by the higher centers
Reflex Arc
The nerve that is an upper arm flexor
Musculocutaneous Nerve
Nerves that are elbow extensors
Radial Nerve
Nerves that are extrinsic finger flexors and pronators
Median Nerve
Nerves that are intrinsic hand muscles
Ulnar Nerve
The nerve that supplies sensory and motor of all thigh except posterior
L2, L3. AND L4
The nerve in the quadriceps and sensory in the anterior thigh.
Femoral Nerve (Posterior)
The nerve in the adductors of the thigh and sensory in the medial aspect of the thigh
Obturator Nerve (Anterior)
The nerve that is sensory only.
Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve.
The nerve that is sensory and motor of the posterior thigh, calf, and foot.
L4, L5, S1, S2, S3, AND S4
