B13.2 Meiosis Flashcards
What does cell division produce ? What do these on stub and where does this process often take place
Gametes
Each containing half the genetic material know as HAPLOID
Occurs in testicles and ovaries
What do gametes (sex cells) combine to form?
Combine together to from a unique full set a chromosomes
Egg+sperm
What are the stages of Meiosis ?
1 parents cell (diploid) with 46 chromosome
DNA replicated to 92 with genes being mixed up
Cell division twice (diploid) with each having a random mix of DNA
4 daughter cells with half amount of DNA
What are the similarities between mitosis and Meiosis ?
Both
- parents cells have 46 chromosomes
- both replicate the DNA
What are the differences between Meiosis and Mitosis ?
Differences
- mitosis has 1 division, Meiosis has 2
- mitosis has 2 daughter cells, meiosis has 4
- mitosis daughter cells have 46 chromosomes, meiosis has 23
- mitosis produces identical but meiosis produces genetically different daughter cells
