B16 - Adaptations, interdependance and competition Flashcards
(13 cards)
Population definition
total number of organisms living of the same species living in the same geographical area
Community definition
Populations of all of the different species living in the same habitat
Ecosystem definition
A community of organisms
Abiotic definition
A community of organisms interacting with living things
Biotic definition
A community of organisms interacting with non living things
Interdependence definition
Organisms within an ecosystem rely on each other
Complex community
A community made up of different species in different populations
Stable communities
Stable environment = number of species remaining balanced
Different ways of interdependence
• animals eats plants
• animals pollinate plants
•plants use nutrients from animals
• animals uses plant and animal material for shelter
•animals eat other animals
Biotic factors that affect living organisms
- Parasites / pathogens
- New predators
- Availability of food
- interspecific competition
What is interspecific competition?
- When a new species outcompete other species to the point where the population of the vulnerable species are too low for successful breeding therefore dies out
Abiotic factors which effect living organisms
Light intensity
Temperature
Moisture
Soil pH and nutrients
Wind intensity
Availability of oxygen
Availability of Carbon dioxide
What happens to the carnivores plants survive in areas with low levels of nitrate ions?
They trap and digest animal prey
