Meiosis and Mitosis Flashcards
(35 cards)
What are homologous chromosomes?
Approx. same types of chromosomes.
What happens during Prophase 1?
Chromosomes line up and thicken, genes in the same location line up with homologous pairs.
What is the purpose of Meiosis?
Meiosis makes gametes.
What occurs during Metaphase 1?
Chromosomes are in pairs in the middle.
How many chromosomes do sperm and egg cells have?
Sperm cells have 23 chromosomes; egg cells also have 23 chromosomes.
What happens during Anaphase 1?
Spindles pull away chromosomes.
What is Meiosis considered?
Meiosis is a reduction division.
What occurs during Telophase 1?
New nuclei form; 46 chromosomes reduce to 23 chromosomes.
What happens during Cytokinesis?
New cells are formed.
What occurs during Prophase 2?
New cells are formed.
What happens during Metaphase 2?
Chromosomes are in a single line.
What occurs during Anaphase 2?
Chromatids are pulled away from chromosomes.
