Plants - Photosynthesis/ respiration Flashcards
(33 cards)
Waxy Cuticle
Helps reduce water loss from evaporation
Epidermal tissues (Upper)
-Transparent
allows sunlight to pass through to the palisade layer which is full of chloroplasts
Palisade Layer
Lots of chloroplasts , increases photosynthesis
Top of the leaf
Xylem and Phloem Tubes
Xylem- Transport water to the stem to the leaves (TRANSPIRATION)
Phloem- Transports sugars/minerals all around the plant (TRANSLOCATION)
Lower Epidermis
Small holes called stomata to allow CO2 to enter directly into the leaf
•Guard cells
Control gas exchange and water loss
Adaptations of Phloem tubes
- pores (enable movement of cell sap)
- easily transported
- stored food for later
- used directly for energy
Adaptations for Xylem tubes
- One long tube
- strengthened by lignin
Rate of transpiration
Light intensity
Temperature
Humidity
Air flow
Respiration Definition
An EXOTHERMIC reaction that transfers energy from glucose and continuously occurs in living cells
Aerobic Respiration
• Breaks down glucose releasing energy (ATP)
•Happens mainly in humans/ animals
Anaerobic respiration
•In place of lack of oxygen
Formula for Aerobic respiration
Glucose + Oxygen -> Water + Carbon dioxide
C6H12O + O2 -> 6H2O + 6CO2
Formula for anaerobic respiration
IN LACK OF OXGYEN
glucose -> lactic acid
PLANT AND YEAST CELLS (fermentation)
glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide
Uses of fermentation
Bread
Yeast
Alcohol
• light throughto the
palrsade layer
guarde
stomata
Spongy mesophyll
→ airspaces
/ Palisade layer
- has lots of chloroplasts which
helps w/ photosynthesis
means they r
