Why is the fossil record incomplete ?

A

In addition, we do not have the remains of every organism that has ever lived, as most decompose before they even have a chance to become fossils.

How can new species arise ?

A

New species. New species can arise as a result of isolation. This is where two populations of a species become geographically separated. For example, Charles Darwin described speciation of finches this way.
