What are four OC-related disorders discussed in this course (just name them)?
obvs not OCD
- Hoarding disorder
- Body dysmorphic disorder
- Trichotillomania
- Skin picking disorder
What is a common criteria/factor for all OC-related disorders?
That they are characterized by an irrestistible urge to perform distressing and time-consuming compulsive behaviours
Explain hoarding disorder
Persistent difficulty in disposing of belongings due to a strong need to save objects + suffering associated with disposing of them
Explain body dysmorphic disorder
Preoccupation with 1+ subjectively perceived defects/imperfections in appearance (insignificant/not perceived by others)
- Repetitive body-oriented behaviour (grooming, reassurence) or psych activity (comparing)
Explain trichotillomania
Repeated pulling of the hair despite attempts to stop it
Explain skin picking disorder
Repeated plucking of the skin causing skin lesions, despite attempts to stop it
There is a lot of comorbidity between the different OC-related disorders, within individuals and families. What does this suggest?
Common genetic and neuropsych processes that underly these disorders
Could that not also be shared environment tho
What two cognitive impairments seem to underly OC-related disorders?
- Motor inhibition
- Cognitive inflexibility
Note in differing degrees, e.g., trichotillomania does not see point 2
What does the stop-signal task measure?
Motor inhibition
What does set shifting measure?
Cognitive flexibility
