Balance Tests and Measures Flashcards
(12 cards)
Balance Evaluation Systems Test (BESTest)
Assesses:
biomechanical constraints, stability, limits, postural responses, anticipatory postural adjustments sensory orientation, dynamic balance during gait
Takes longer to administer (mini-BESTest is shorter version)
Higher score = less risk for falls
Berg Balance Scale
Assesses: Fall Risk
Less than 45 = Increased fall risk
Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance
(CTSIB)
Assesses:
contributions of sensory systems to balance
Firm surface eyes open and closed, firm surface w/ dome, foam surface eyes open, closed, and dome
30 s trials then are averaged
Dynamic Gait Index (DGI)
Assesses: Balance w gait
Less than 19 = increased fall risk
Four Square Step Test
Assesses: ability to step in multiple directions
Greater than 15 s = increased fall risk
Fregly-Graybiel Ataxia Test Battery
More challenging test nest suited for someone with high level motor skills
Fugl-Meyer Sensorimotor Assessment of Balance Performance Battery
Assesses : Balance specifically for patients with HEMIPLEGIA
Higher is better
Fullerton Advanced Balance Scale
Assesses: advanced balance tasks
Created for higher functioning adults to avoid ceiling affect of other balance assessments
Less than 26 = increased fall risk
Functional Gait Assessment
Assesses: higher level functional balance tasks over the DGI
Less than 23 = increased fall risk
Functional Reach Test
Assesses stadning balance and risk of falling
NORMS:
20-40 yrs = 14.5 -17 in
41-69 yrs = 13.5 - 15 in
70-87 yrs = 10.5 - 13.5 in
Below average for age = increased fall risk
Timed up and go (TUG)
Assesses mobility and balance
Independent = 10 s or less
Greater than 20 s = increased fall risk
Greater than 30 s = High fall risk
Tinetti Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment
Assesses balance through transfers and gait speeds
Less than 19 = increased fall risk
