aim
investigating how one’s schema would affect the way a story is memorised by an individual
woild it lead to memory distortion
he hypothesized memrog is revonstructive and that ppl recomstrucy them according to schemas
participants
20 male undergraduates from
cambridge BRITISH
procedure
told them a natuve american tale war of ghosts that theybwere unfamiliar with
so the story was filled with unknown names and contexts
and it was debeloped in a way that was fireign to themm
2 condirions
- repeated reproduction (reproduce it acfer a short time amd then repeatadly over lomger leriods of gime, days, weeks, months, years)
- serial reproduction (to another person)
results
no significant differences between the 2 conditions
participants in BOTH condotions distorted the story as they tried to revall it,
in 3 patterns of distortion
1) ASSIMILATION - consitany with the participanyw own culture and their cultural expectations- details were unconsciousky ttansformed to fit british norms
2) LEVELING - the story became shorter iver time as the participants omitted details they didnnit consider pivotal
3) SHARPENING - participanys gendrd ti chwnge the order of the stiry to develop it in a british way to make it more familiar to their pwn culture
conclusion
