Bartlett reconstructive memory Flashcards
(4 cards)
Bartlett argued
that when we recall information we actively reconstruct the info drawing from past experiences expectations and beliefs
if we want to remember something
we must first interpret the event and make mental notes on it, when it comes to recalling the event we will draw from past experiences to reinterpret the notes, fill in the gaps and form a coherent story
schemas
to do this we use schemas, these are patterns of thought or behaviours we can use to organise information in our memory from past experiences into packages of info
schemas 2
Bartlett argued we use schemas to fill in the gaps in our memory when we can’t remember all the info, this can lead to distorted recall
