Q

How do you file an IFR flight plan?

A
  • file at least 30 minutes prior to estimated departure
  • 4 hours before if flying above FL230
  • file with ATC, EFB(ForeFlight), online, FSS(by phone to weather briefing)

11
Q

How do you cancel your flight plan?

A

Towered airports- automatically canceled by ATC
Non towered airports- pilot must contact ATP/FCC to cancel by radio or phone

Can cancel anytime in flight if out of IMC and out of class A airspace

12
Q

What are IFR plan requirements?

A

No person may operate an aircraft in controlled airspace under ifr unless:

  • filed an IFR flight plan
  • received an appropriate ATC clearance

You can fly IFR in uncontrolled airspace without flight plan or clearance but you must remain in uncontrolled airspace until you file a flight plan and get an ATC clearance

Q

Do you need a destination alternate? (1-2-3 rule)

A

Alternate is always required unless:
- instrument approach is published and available for the destination
- at least 1 hour before to 1 hour after ETA:
ceiling will be at least 2000’
and visibility at least 3SM

15
Q

What are the minimum weather conditions required at an airport to list it as an alternate?

A

Alternate minima published in procedure charts if none:

  • precision approach; 600 ft and 2sm
  • non precision approach; 800 ft and 2sm
  • no instrument approach available; ceiling and visibility must allow descent from MEA, approach and landing under VFR

16
Q

What are IFR cruising altitudes?

A

Based on magnetic course:
0-179 odd thousands
180-359 even thousands

East is always odd!

17
Q

What are IFR takeoff minimums?

A

Prescribed T/O minimums for the runway or:
1-2 engine; 1sm
More than 2 engines; 1/2sm

18
Q

What is the IFR departure clearance? (Hint: CRAFT)

A
C- clearance limit
R- route
A- altitude
F- frequency
T- transponder
19
Q

What are the 2 types of Departure procedures?

A

Obstacle departure procedure(ODP):
- provide only obstacle clearance

Standard instrument departure(SID):

  • obstacle clearance reduces pilot and controller workload, simplifies ATC clearances minimizing radio communications
  • some SIDS may have special radio failure procedures
20
Q

Are you required to accept a departure clearance?

A

No

21
Q

What is a standard terminal arrival(STAR)?

A
  • serves as a transition between the en route structure and a point from which an approach to landing can be made
  • transition routes connect en route fixes to the STAR procedure
  • usually named according to the fix at which the basic procedure begins
  • you don’t need to accept a STAR procedure; “no STARs” in the remark section of flight plan just like SIDS
22
Q

What are the minimum IFR altitudes?

A

Minimum altitudes prescribed or if none:

  • mountainous areas; 2000ft above the highest obstacle within a horizontal distance of 4NM
  • non mountainous areas; 1000ft above the highest obstacle within 4NM
