Twin studies and adoption studies
Used to see genetics vs environment
Natural experiments no direct harm but can cause psychological harm etc
Molecular genetics
Identified specific genes that may be linked to behavior
Behavior genetics
Interdisciplinary field that combines psychiatry genetics pharmacy genetics genetic association
Adoption studies Leonard Heston
1966
- compared children of mothers with schizophrenia and found similar risk
- showed genetics contribute significantly to schizophrenia
- challenged earlier nurture belief saying it’s not just poor parenting
Caspi et al, 5-HTTLPR gene and depression
- 5-HTTLPR: serotonin transporter gene with different variants (s/s, s/l, l/l)
- people with s/s had more risk of depression under stress
Caspi et al 5-HTTLPR and suicide
Same gene moderates impact of suicidal thoughts
