How does a game of basketball start?
Two players stand on either side of the referee and throw the ball up between them. Called a jump ball.
In a regular game, how many players are on each team?
5 players on each team.
Explain the 3 different ways you can score when playing basketball?
Free throw - 1 point (only done when fouled by a player on other team)
Shooting from inside the three point line - 2 points
Shooting outside the three point line - 3 points
What are 3 essential skills needed to play basketball?
Dribbling, passing , shooting.
If you had to teach someone the 3 essential basketball skills, what are a few pointers you would teach them?
Dribbling: Spread your fingers apart and use your fingertips to bounce the ball off the floor
Shooting: keep one hand behind the ball while the other hand balances and guides the ball. Flip your wrist down and follow through, BEEF (balance, eyes, elbows, follow through)
Passing: chest pass, bounce pass, overhead pass (hold ball with both hands)
When laying up, how many steps are you allowed to take before you get called for traveling?
Two steps
Explain 3 different types of fouls in basketball?
Blocking: personal contact that keeps an opponent from moving
Personal foul: illegal physical contact with an opponent
Holding: player holds their opponent
Technical foul: poor sportsmanship like arguing with the referee and violating other rules
Explain what traveling is?
Moving more than two steps without dribbling the ball
What are the 2 different ways you can double dribble in a game?
Stop dribbling, then dribble again or dribble with both hands at the same time.
If you’re playing small half court games, and you are on defense and get a rebound from a missed offensive shot, explain what you need to do in order to continue playing and attempt to score?
Pass the ball to a teammate who can either dribble, pass to another teammate, or take a shot.
Explain 3 offensive strategies in basketball?
Motion offense: players constantly move and pass the ball.
Continuity offense: players go back to their starting positions until they can make a shot.
Triangle offense: three players from the same team form a triangle so that shots can be made.
Explain 3 defensive strategies?
Man to man defense: Each player is assigned to guard a specific player on the other team
Zone defense: each player is assigned a different side of the court to defend
Press defense: Aggressively guarding the ball to force turnovers
