When should there be a high suspicion for abuse?
-an unexpected delay for seeking help
-old, unexplained fractures on x-ray
-injury not matching history/accident
-burns on buttocks
-burns on both lower legs
-cigarette burns
Signs of human trafficking
-may be branded/tattooed
-wearing expensive clothing
-have companion speaking on their behalf
-may have frequent STIs
Managing a sex trafficking victim
-separate victim from any other person
-provide support and resources
-coach on hotline number
-have policies in place for team roles and procedures
-minor: follow laws for child abuse
-adult: reporting to police is not standard
What to assess for patients with anorexia?
-Electrolytes, especially potassium
-cardiac status, especially long Q-T
-signs of malnutrition
What to assess for patients with bulimia?
-history of laxatives, diet pills, enemas
-metabolic alkalosis from vomiting
-signs of induced vomiting: tooth decay, irritated knuckles
