Behaviour and Communication Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is behaviour
It’s everything animals do
Describe atypical, typical, stereotypical and give two examples
Atypical - unusual behaviour
- coprophagy feather plucking
Typical - normal usual behaviour
- migration foraging
Stereotypical - repetitive behaviour
- pacing bar biting
What things can influence an animals behaviour
Hormones
Other animals
Fixed action patterns
Seasonal variations
- food availability
- weather
- daylight
What’s the different between captive and wild animals
Captive - live in environments controlled by humans
Wild - live in their natural habitat
Name six types of enrichment
Environmental
Behavioural
Social
Food
Sensory
Habitat
What does enrichment prevent and improve and reduce
Reduce boredom
Prevent stress
Prevent aggressive behaviour
Prevent stereotypical behaviour
Improve physical health
Improve psychological well being
What are the sampling methods you can use to record behaviour
Ad libitum
Behaviour sampling
Focal sampling
Scan sampling
Continuous
Instantaneous
One-zero
What’s the different between instinctive and learnt behaviour
Instinctive is behaviours animals are born knowing how to do
Learnt behaviour is things they pick up from other animals or environment
What’s the difference between bonding and imprinting
Bonding is a close connection that develops over time
Imprinting is when a young animal quickly attaches to the first moving thing it sees
What’s the difference between polygamy and monogamy
Polygamy is where one animal has multiple mates
Monogamy is where a female and male pair up to raise offspring but they only mate with each other
What’s the difference between linear hierarchy and complex hierarchy
Linear - ‘pecking order’ where each animal knows its place
Complex - complicated social structure with different ranks and groups
What is courtship
It’s specific behaviours some animals do to attract mates
What’s agonistic behaviour and affiliative behaviour
Agonistic is aggressive behaviour animals use to compete for resources
Affiliative is friendly behaviour that bring individuals close together
What is social bonding
It’s the formation of social bonding
What is altruism
It’s where an animal helps another at its own expense
What’re the three main types of evolution
Explain the divergent convergent and parallel types of evolution
Divergent is related species becoming different
Convergent is unrelated species becoming similar
Parallel is similar species independently evolving similar traits
