Behavioural Explanation Of Phobias Flashcards
(2 cards)
Two process model
-The explanation in which we explain the acquisition and maintenance of phobias through learning.
-Acquisition occurs via classical conditioning: a neutral stimulus becomes a conditions stimulus as a result of being associated with a fear inducing unconditioned stimulus.
-Maintenance occurs via operant conditioning: phobic behaviour is negatively reinforced, avoiding the stimulus removes the unpleasant anxiety, reinforcing the phobia, in turn maintaining it.
Two process model eval
+Practical application, allowed us to develop treatments such as systematic desensitisation.
-Doesnt explain phobias that are developed without traumatic experiences.
-Ignores innate phobias, like sharks or heights which are developed for survival purposes.
