Cognitive Treatment Of Depression Flashcards
(3 cards)
Features of Beck’s CBT
-‘patient as a scientist’ - where the therapist has the patient conduct hypothesis testing of their own on their own negative beliefs to make them find out for themselves that their beliefs are wrong.
-‘thought catching’ - identify irrational thoughts that come as a result of the negative triad.
-‘homework tasks’ - patients are made to keep a journal of their thoughts to identify situations that cause their negative thinking.
-making patients take part in activities they used to enjoy.
-Becks CBT tries to make the patient recognise independently that their depression is delusional.
General cognitive treatment of depression
-Both ellis’s REBT and beck’s CBT attempt to change negative schemas and challenge irrational thoughts through cognitive restructuring.
Ellis’s REBT
-Rational emotive behavioural therapy.
-The development of the ABC model adding D and E, with D standing for dispute and the E for effect.
-Dispute - the therapist confronts/challenges the patient’s irrational beliefs. The therapist will ask for evidence of the beliefs whilst using logic to attempt to explain why they don’t make sense.
-Effect - If executed correctly it should resolve B and C by restructuring our beliefs, in turn leading to better consequences in the future.
-Ellis’s REBT tries to make the therapist spell it out to the patient that their depression is delusional.
