Benvolio Flashcards
(7 cards)
thesis
Shakespeare presents Benvolio as a character who subverts violent masculine stereotypes by consistently seeking peace; however, his failure to prevent tragedy reflects Shakespeare’s criticism of how good intentions are powerless without action in a corrupt society.
essay plan
At the start of the play, Shakespeare presents Benvolio’s peace-loving nature as a direct foil to Tybalt’s aggression, subverting toxic masculine stereotypes rooted in bravado and honour culture.
As the play progresses, Shakespeare uses Benvolio’s support of Romeo as a stereotypical Petrarchan lover to critique those who unintentionally fail the vulnerable by offering misguided advice, even when well-meaning.
Towards the end of the play, Shakespeare uses Benvolio’s betrayal of Romeo to highlight the self-inflicted nature of fate and expose the wide-reaching effects of conflict; although he survives by subverting violent norms, he still suffers deep personal loss.
