thesis
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare explores the destructive power of extreme emotions, especially isolation. Shakespeare critiques how overwhelming emotions, unchecked by rational thought, can drive individuals towards tragic ends.
essay plan
At the start of the play, Shakespeare presents Romeo’s volatile nature as a Petrarchan lover to critique the way extreme, performative emotion can lead to self-imposed isolation, particularly in young men consumed by idealised love.
As the play continues, Shakespeare uses the Nurse’s betrayal of Juliet and Juliet’s descent into desperation to explore how emotional abandonment leads to isolation, condemning the failure of adult figures to support the vulnerable in times of emotional need.
Towards the end of the play, Shakespeare presents the physical and emotional isolation of Romeo and Juliet in the tomb as a tragic consequence of unchecked emotion, using their deaths to condemn a society that allows extreme feelings to go unmoderated and isolates young people instead of guiding them.
