Through the character of Lord Capulet, Shakespeare presents a patriarchal figure who embodies the oppressive power structures of Elizabethan society, ultimately critiquing how authoritarian control leads to personal and communal tragedy.

At the start of the play, Shakespeare uses Lord Capulet’s authority over Juliet’s marriage to expose the limitations placed on women within a patriarchal society. Although Lord Capulet displays genuine care for his daughter, it remains as justification as to why he exerts this control of her.
As the play continues, Shakespeare portrays Lord Capulet’s insecurity when his authority is challenged to critique the fragility and destructiveness of toxic masculinity.
Towards the end of the play, Shakespeare displays the consequences of Lord Capulet’s abuse of power, driven by his desire to secure his family’s future, to highlight how acting out of excessive emotion can lead to tragedy.
