Bio #2 Flashcards
(34 cards)
Element
It is a particular type of atom that cannot be broke down further by ordinary chemical means.
compound?
A substance made of atoms of different elements bonded together in a certain ratio.
ATP?
A substance present in all living cells that provides energy for many metabolic processes and is involved in making RNA.
Why is ATP important
. It is important because the phosphate groups are high-energy bonds that cells can use.
Photosynthesis-
Process of plants making sugar.
Krebs cycle
the sequence of reactions by which most living cells generate energy during the process of aerobic respiration.
Where does krebs cycle respiration occur
The Mitrochondrial Matrix.
What is needed to start the krebs cycle
The glucose that glycolysis tried to break down.
What is produced in the krebs cycle
three molecules of NADH, one molecule of FADH2 and one molecule of ATP or GTP
What is fermentaion
When oxygen is unavailable but cells will still make ATP.
A use for fermentation
When we are running and need energy but we do not breathe in enough oxygen.
How are photosynthesis and respiration linked?
Respiration’s formula is photosynthesis’ formula reversed.
What is the Cell Theory?
All living things are made of cells, All cells come from other living cells, and The cell is the most basic unit of life.
What characteristics do ALL cells have in common?
They all come from other living cells.
How do prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells differ?
Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus while Prokaryotic cells do not.
Distinguish between a plant and animal cell.
A plant cell has a cell wall while animal cells don’t.
Is a function of a cell wall found in animal or plant cells.
Protects, supports, and shapes plant cell. Is found only on plant cells.
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather is the short term changes in clouds, precipitation, etc. While climate is the averages in clouds, precipitation, etc. in a year.
What is the greenhouse effect?
greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere.
What is climate change?
Changes in temperature, winds, patterns, etc.
How does the tilt of the Earth affect seasons?
The tilt of the Earth causes seasons.
How does latitude and the curvature of the Earth affect heating?
The curvature of the Earth results in uneven heating.
What causes wind AND the global wind patterns around earth?
The uneven heating in the Earth’s atmosphere.
How does wind affect the global surface currents?
It causes ocean surface currents. And affects weather and climate on coastal areas.
