BIO (Ch. 2) Flashcards

(28 cards)

1
Q

What is Metastasis?

A

The process of cancer cells breaking away from the original (primary) tumour and establishing a another (secondary) tumour somewhere else in the body.

Q

What is the function of the cell wall? In what kind of cell is it found?

A

Provides rigid structure and protection; made of cellulose. Found in plant cells.

Q

What is the function of cytoplasm?

A

All the organelles are suspended by the cytoplasm– everything inside of the cell membrane except for the nucleus

16
Q

What is the function of the mitochondria?

A

produces energy – the POWERHOUSE OF THE CELLLLLLL

17
Q

What is the function of a vacuole?

A

vesicle that provides storage of water and other materials; full vacuoles provide support

18
Q

What is the function of chloroplasts?

A

uses the energy of sunlight to produce glucose through photosynthesis

19
Q

What is interphase?

A

The phase of the cell cycle during which the cell performs its normal functions and its genetic material is copied in preparation for cell division

20
Q

What are examples of medical imaging technologies used to detect cancer?

A

Endoscopy, X-ray, CT scanning, and MRI

21
Q

What are the 4 stages of mitosis?

A

Prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase (PMAT)

22
Q

What is mitosis?

A

The stage of the cell cycle in which the DNA in the nucleus is divided, the first part of cell division

23
Q

What are the two stages of cell division?

A

Mitosis and cytokinesis

24
Q

What is cytokinesis?

A

The stage in the cell cycle when the cytoplasm divides to form two identical cells, the final part of cell division

25
Describe PMAT
1. Prophase: chromosomes become visible and the nuclear membrane dissolves 2. Metaphase: chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell 3. Anaphase: centromere splits and sister chromatids separate into daughter chromosomes, and each moves towards opposite ends of the cell 4. Telophase: chromatids unwind and a nuclear membrane reforms around the chromosomes at each end of the cell
26
What are some cancer treatments?
Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation
27
What is selective permeability?
Allowing some substances (oxygen/water molecules) to enter through the cell membrane but not allowing others (larger molecules like proteins) to go through
28
What is meiosis?
When two gametes (half cells) combine, inheriting characteristics from both parents.
