CHEM (Ch. 6) Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is a word equation?
What is a chemical equation?
Word Equation: names of the chemicals are written out in full
Chemical Equation: chemical formulas are used to represent the chemicals
What are reactants?
What are products?
Reactants: the substances that are used up during the reaction
Products: the substances that are produced during the reaction
What is the law of conservation of mass?
Total mass of reactants = total mass of products. Use coefficients to balance equations.
What is a synthesis reaction?
When two simple reactants combine to make a larger or more complex product (A + B -> AB)
What is a decomposition reaction?
Opposite of a synthesis reaction - large compounds are broken down into smaller compounds or elements (AB -> A +B)
What is a single displacement reaction?
When one element displaces an element in a compound (A + BC -> AC +B)
What is a double displacement reaction?
When two elements in different compounds trade places. (AB +CD -> AD + CB)
What is complete combustion (+ chem formula)? What is incomplete combustion?
A chemical reaction in which a fuel burns or reacts quickly with oxygen. Chemical formula: hydrocarbon + O2(g) → CO2(g), H2O(g), energy.
Incomplete combustion occurs if oxygen supply is limited; leaves a sooty residue and CO gas in addition to carbon dioxide and water.
What is corrosion?
The breakdown of a metal as a result of chemical reactions with its environment
