Biochem ETC Flashcards
(13 cards)
Describe the permeability of the outer mitochondrial membrane and the inner mitochondrial membrane
Outer: very Poris
Inner: Impermeable
What gets oxidated and what gets phosphorylated with the Electron Transport Chain and The ATPase
Electron carriers are re-oxidized to make water
ADP gets phosphorylated to make ATP (energy)
What is used for energy in the creation of ATP with the ATPase and phosphorylation
The H concentration gradient
Is the ATP synthase a part of the Electron transport chain?
No
Where do the Protons (H’s) get pumped with the ETC
They get pumped into the inter-membrane space FROM the Mitochondrial Matrix
What part of the Mitochondrial membrane is the ETC located
On the inter mitochondrial membrane
What kind of protein is Cyt c?
It is a peripheral membrane protein
What function (what are) Cyt C and Co-enzyme Q in the ETC (what is their purpose)
They are electron carriers that move along the ETC
Is Co-enzyme Q tightly bound to His?
No
How many H’s or protons get moved across the membrane per every FADH2
Which complexes do this
How many per each complex
6 protons
Complex 3 (4 protons)
Complex 4 (2 protons)
Why are protons NOT pumped across complex two in the ETC
Because there is not enough energy to do so
In complex 2 of the ETC what does it function as for Succinate and Fumarate?
What does it contain?
It catalyzes the oxidation of succinate to fumarate (part of CAC)
It has a prosthetic group in it
What are the two kinds of energies that the potential of the H gradient is converted into in the ETC
- Mechanical energy
- Chemical energy in the form of ATP (stored in phosphoanhydride bonds)
