Biodiversity Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is biodiversity?
The variety of life on Earth. Three levels: genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity.
Why is biodiversity important?
Interdependence: Species rely on each other. Stability: Increases ecosystem resilience. Human reliance: Provides food, medicine, and raw materials.
Why is the human population growing, and how does this impact biodiversity?
Causes: Better healthcare, agriculture, and living conditions. Impact: Habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation, and climate change.
What impact is deforestation having on biodiversity?
Habitat loss, species extinction, disrupted food chains, and reduced carbon absorption.
What impact is increased agriculture having on biodiversity?
Deforestation, habitat destruction, monoculture reducing species diversity, pesticide use harming wildlife.
What is causing climate change?
Greenhouse gases (CO₂, methane) from burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial activities.
What impact is climate change having on biodiversity?
Habitat loss, species migration, coral bleaching, extreme weather events reducing populations.
What are the aesthetic reasons for maintaining biodiversity?
Nature’s beauty, ecotourism, mental well-being, and cultural value.
What are the economic reasons for maintaining biodiversity?
Resources for medicine, food, and industry, ecotourism, and ecosystem services (pollination, clean water).
What are the ecological reasons for maintaining biodiversity?
Maintains ecosystem balance, nutrient cycles, food chains, and climate regulation.
