What do plants need to photosynthesise?
Water and carbon dioxide
What is the role of the stomata
Stomata is tiny holes in the leaves to allow carbon dioxide to diffuse in the leaf for photosynthesis
What is light energy used to do?
Transform the carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen.
What is photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is an endothermic process where plants absorb light energy through chlorophyll to make food.
What is the equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water➡️glucose + oxygen
What can you do to test leaves for photosynthesis?
You can test leaves for starch, by :
1)Boil the leaf in water
2)Put the leaf into a test tube of ethanol and place in a boiling tube
3)Wash the leaf in water
4)Spread the leaf on a white tile and add a few drops of iodine.
5) If the leaf turns dark blue the leaf has starch and photosynthesis
What does water do in photosynthesis
Water is absorbed from the roots
What does carbon dioxide do photosynthesis?
It enters through the stomata of the leaves
What is chlorophyll’s
What does oxygen do in photosynthesis
It is given off into the air
What does sugar do in photosynthesis
It converts into starch
What does starch do in photosynthesis
Starch stores food in other plants of the plant
What is the epidermis’s adaptation to help the leaf photosynthesise
It is transparent allowing sunlight to pass through
What is the waxy cuticle layer’s adaptation to help the leaf photosynthesise
Reduces water loss
What is the vein’s adaptation to help the leaf photosynthesise
It transports sugar and water aorund
What is the stomata’s adaptation to help the leaf photosynthesise
It has holes which allow carbon dioxide and oxygen out. Stomata is controlled by the guard cells
What is the spongy mesophyll’s adaptation to help the leaf photosynthesise
It has air spaces which allow diffusion
What is the broad, flat leaves’ adaptation to help the leaf photosynthesise
It has a large surface area, more sunlight can be absorbed
What is thin leaves’ adaptation to help the leaf photosynthesise
It provides a short diffusion so gases can enter or leave quicker
What does xylem vessels do
Xylem transports food and solutes from the roots to the leaves
What does phloem vessels do
Phloem transport foods from the leaves to the rest of the plant
What is nitrogen needed for?
Healthy growth
What is phosphorus needed for?
Healthy roots
What is magnesium needed for?
Making chlorophyll
