Q

What has biofuel production historically been driven by?

A

Economics.
e.g. tax on alcohol in the US meant people did not buy ethanol fuel for cars.

8
Q

What is bioethanol?

A

Made by fermentation of sugars and starches e.g. maize and sugarcane.
Can be used as vehicle fuel in its pure form (E10) or can be added to petrol.

Q

What is biodiesel?

A

Made by transesterification process from fats and oils from plants.
Can be used as vehicle fuel in its pure form (B100) or added to diesel.

Q

Why are bioethanol and biodiesel blended into fuels?

A
  • Bioethanol increases octane rating
  • Biodiesel increases cetane rating
  • Reduces pollutants
  • Bioethanol is corrosive so hard to transport
  • Biodiesel is a solvent and coagulates at low temperatures

13
Q

Why is it difficult to change the amount of maize used for biofuel production?

A

Changing proportion has a huge impact on food prices.

14
Q

Why can some biofuels be worse than fossil fuels and which ones?

A

With land use change considered, some biofuels are worse than fossil fuels.
e.g. molasses, soybean, wheat

15
Q

What is 2nd generation biofuel?

A
  • Cellulose fuel
  • Made from non-food crop biomass
  • Not as much fertiliser is needed, but needs huge investment to be viable.

16
Q

What is 3rd generation biofuel?

A
  • Algal fuel
  • Can grow in photobioreactors, open ponds, in floating bags in ocean
  • No herbicides/pesticides needed
  • Grows very fast (1-10 day harvest cycle)
  • Photobioreactor is very expensive, open ponds can be prone to contamination
  • Energetically expensive
17
Q

What is 4th generation biofuel?

A
  • Synthetic fuel (chemical bonds in liquids and gases)
18
Q

What are implications for the future of biofuels?

A
  • Fossil fuels used in transport would exceed the 2 degree COP21 target
  • Past increases in biofuels have been due to the low cost of biofuels, not carbon, this is unsustainable.
