Biological Explanations Flashcards

What is the Monoamine hypothesis?
Researches looked at resperine which had depression as a side effect. It reduces noradrenaline and this was proposed as a cause for depression. Then they focused on seretonin which Controls noradrenaline levels.
Meaning an imbalance could cause a depressive episode or manic. This depends on if noradrenaline is too high or low.
Which studies are used as evidence for the monoamine hypothesis
Prange et al, that noradrenaline levels are controlled by seretonin seretonin
Why is it called monoamine hypothesis?
Seretonin and noradrenaline are both monoamine
What is the Seretonin imbalance explanation?
Seretonin levels can rise and fall based on diet or other reasons.
A change in diet can change levels due to trytophan which produces seretonin being found in certain food. Production can also be inhibited by cortisol.
What is the Genetic explanation?
Thoughts feelings and behaviours are determined by signals passed between clusters of neurons in our nervous system. Genes provide the instruction that dictate how these networks develop.
Biochemical explanation issues and debates?
Wk:
Nature vs nurture:
Focus on nature=nurture undervalued.Change in Social status for monkeys changes seretonin levels. -40%
+60%
Monoamine explanation issues and debate
Wk:
Monoamine expl is extremely deterministic.
Suggest everyone responds the same to Chang win neurochemicals.Shows our vulnerability to depression cannot be predicted because Strickland et al show depressed women have higher seretonin than non depressed women.
