Biological Molecules (Spec) Flashcards
(12 cards)
Types of monomers
Monosacharides, amino acids, nucleotides.
What is a monomer?
Smaller units from which larger molecules are made.
What is a polymer?
Molecules made from a large number of monomers joined together.
What does a condensation reaction do?
Joins two molecules together with the foundation of a chemical bond and involves the elimination of a molecule of water.
What does a hydrolysis reaction do?
Breaks a chemical bond between two molecules and involves the use of a water molecule.
What are monosacharides?
The monomers from which larger carbohydrates are made.
Name 3 monosacharides
Glucose, Fructose, Galactose
What bond from between two monosacharides during a condensation reaction?
Glycosidic.
What is the result from a condensation reaction between two monosacharides?
A Disaccharide + H²O
Maltose is formed by?
The condensation reaction between two glucose molecules.
Sucrose is formed by?
The condensation reaction between glucose molecule and a fructose molecule.
Lactose is formed by?
The condensation reaction of a glucose molecule and a galactose molecule.
